The MULTIPLEX project was presented at the Second Joint Workshop on Initiatives of Low-Dose Research Co-ordination Washington, DC, United States hold on 23-24 June 2026.

Project objectives and goals

The MULTIPLEX project aims to develop an integrated approach for ecological risk assessment and management regarding environmental exposure of aquatic ecosystems to ionizing radiation, chemical mixtures, and thermal stress. Currently, authorities assess each of these risks separately, using different metrics, and MULTIPLEX will explore the feasibility of cumulative risk assessment to predict ecotoxicity of multiple stressors.

The multiple nature of integrated risks will be explored with case studies in France, Belgium and Norway. The project will also integrate advanced computational technologies, like artificial intelligence (AI) and Bayesian machine learning, to address knowledge gaps and improve predictive models. Partners will collaborate closely with decision-makers to identify needs and challenges related to these integrated assessments.

MULTIPLEX stands out due to its holistic approach, combining advanced models, laboratory experiments, and field studies to provide practical and scientifically sound recommendations.
