MULTIPLEX at a joint OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) & EPRI workshop in Washington D.C.

At the Second Joint Workshop on Initiatives of Low-Dose Research Co-ordination Washington, DC, United States 23-24 June 2026, hosted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and co-organized with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), Nele Horemans (SCK CEN) presented MULTIPLEX challenges that are increasingly relevant for environmental protection and radiation research.

Ecosystems are often exposed to a mix of stressors, including radionuclides, metals, organic pollutants, temperature changes and drought. So how do these stressors interact, and what does that mean for the environment over the long term? Nele shared the scientific challenges behind answering these questions and highlighted how the MULTIPLEX project is developing new experimental and modelling approaches to better assess the combined effects of multiple contaminants.
